Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Mobile Sonographer
Are you curious about what working for a mobile ultrasound company might look like as a sonographer? In this post, we will outline some key details, focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of working as a mobile sonographer.
One word comes to mind when considering mobile ultrasound: flexibility. Flexibility is an important skill our sonographers must possess as they travel to a variety of different clinics and perform different ultrasounds on varying types of patients. Most of our clients are doctors’ offices that only have ultrasound when we are in office-- we set up a mini ultrasound department in their office for the day. This might include bringing in a machine cart, supplies, and maybe even rearranging the room for the day. Each office operates differently and we try our best to camouflage into their daily workflow. Our services ensure the seamless integration of ultrasound into the office for both the staff and the patient.
Many of our clinics require some amount of travel, so sonographers spend their time listening to their favorite music or podcast while sipping on their caffeine of choice. After unloading our equipment into the office (our machine is in a rolling suitcase), sonographers pull up their daily schedule on the laptop and organize the room to their liking with their lamp, gel warmer, and supplies. Each office is set up differently and it can take a few visits before determining what works best for each sonographer.
As healthcare providers, we feel a deep responsibility to meet patients where they are in their health journey. Being a sonographer myself, I can attest that the patients I scan are a large part of why I do what I do. Ultrasounds shouldn’t be a scary, uncomfortable experience! Talking through the exam with patients, reassuring them of the turnaround time on reports, and even warming up the cold gel all make their experience better!
Despite being a mobile operation, the hospital grade ultrasound quality is not lost at Innovative Ultrasound Solutions. We ensure our sonographers are registered in the exams they perform and we have board certified radiologists read each exam. Our machine, a Mindray M8 Elite, performs with optimal imaging quality as well.
